If you've been shopping for SPC flooring for more than five minutes, you've run into the word "mil." It's right there on the spec sheet between "core thickness" and "click-lock system," and it sounds like it should mean millimeter - but it doesn't. That single point of confusion trips up a lot of buyers, and choosing the wrong wear layer thickness for your space is a mistake that's tough to undo once the floor is down.
So let's sort it out, plain and simple.
Mil ≠ Millimeter
A mil is one-thousandth of an inch (0.001"). It has nothing to do with millimeters. The two are easy to mix up, so here's a quick side-by-side:
- 12 mil = 0.012 inches = about 0.3 mm
- 20 mil = 0.020 inches = about 0.5 mm
That doesn't sound like a huge gap, but in flooring terms, the difference is significant. Going from 12 mil to 20 mil gives you roughly 65% more protective material on the surface of your floor. That's the layer doing all the heavy lifting against scratches, scuffs, pet claws, dropped pots, and rolling chairs.
What Is the Wear Layer, Exactly?
Think of our SPC flooring like a sandwich. From the bottom up, you've got:

The wear layer is what you're walking on every day. Once it's worn through, the decorative layer underneath is exposed and at that point, the floor needs to be replaced. You can't sand or refinish it the way you can with hardwood.
So the mil number isn't a marketing gimmick. It's a real durability spec.
Which Wear Layer Thickness Do You Actually Need?
Here's a practical breakdown by use case:
12 mil: Standard residential. Perfectly fine for bedrooms, home offices, and lighter-use areas. Good value if you're not dealing with heavy foot traffic or pets.
20 mil: The sweet spot for most homes. Rated for heavy residential use and light commercial spaces. This is what you want in kitchens, hallways, living rooms, and anywhere pets or kids spend time. It's also the minimum recommended thickness for rental properties.
28 mil and above: True commercial-grade. Built for retail spaces, clinics, hospitality, and high-traffic commercial floors that need to look good for decades with minimal maintenance.
Wear Layer vs. Total Thickness Are Not the Same Thing
A 6.5mm plank can have a 12 mil wear layer. A 5mm plank can have a 20 mil wear layer. These are two completely different specs that measure two completely different things - and they don't move together.
Total thickness (measured in mm) controls how the floor feels underfoot, how well it hides minor subfloor imperfections, and how much sound it absorbs.
Wear layer (measured in mil) controls how long the surface stays looking new under real-world use.
When you're comparing products, check both numbers. A thick plank with a thin wear layer is going to scuff up faster than a thinner plank with a 20 mil wear layer. Always verify both specs independently before buying.
